About Storm Retirement Village

Storm Retirement Village was established in 1989 as the result of the generosity from the late Mrs. Valerie Hughes, who bequeathed a significant sum of money to establish an Aged Care Facility in the town of Taree, similar in concept to the Mowll Village in Castle Hill.

It was named in memory of her parents Jane Elizabeth and Edward Storm, who operated a jewellery business in Taree for many years.

With some assistance from the Commonwealth Government, a hostel of 50 beds was built in 1990, followed by 18 self-care villas, on land acquired by the Trustees of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle in Cowper Street, Taree.

Since then a 55 bed Nursing Home has been added and an additional 2 self-care villas were built. A Dementia Specific Unit was completed in 2004 with 12 beds.

The board was appointed by an order of the Governor of NSW following an Ordinance of the Synod of the Diocese of Newcastle.

The board currently consists of:
  • The Bishop of Newcastle (President),
  • The Reverend Milton Fowell (Chairman),
  • The Rector of Taree,
  • The Registrar of the diocese and
  • 7 local businesses and professional people.
In October 2005 building commenced on a 15 bed extension and joining of the hostel and nursing home buildings to allow for "Ageing in Place" where people care can be delivered without relocating residents as their needs change. This cost around $3 Million.

A whole new low care/high care residential facility will shortly be constructed on a "Greenfield" site on land owned by the Diocese at Cundletown expected to cost $14 Million.

The local board has full control of the village.
